Gateway Communications, a major supplier of African telecommunications services, has received the award for ‘Best African Wholesale Offering’ for an incredible fourth year running at the 2011 Capacity Awards. The awards acknowledge the efforts, innovation, investments and advances made in the wholesale telecoms market, and this particular category considers the challenges that wholesale carriers have faced on the African continent.

“We are extremely proud again to receive the ‘Best African Wholesale Offering’ award for the fourth year in a row,” says Mike van den Bergh, CEO, Gateway Communications. “In 2012, we’ll continue to provide the highest quality, most reliable connectivity across Africa and work hard to retain this prestigious award, as well as extending our network footprint and expertise into the Middle East.”

Gateway Communications owns and operates the largest and most advanced pan-African telecommunications network, and has a well-established wholesale business servicing GSM, fixed line and wireless operators across the African continent.  The company’s CellDirect solution, utilizing Demand Assigned Multiple Access (DAMA) technology, improves satellite utilisation for mobile network operators, increasing efficiency and reducing costs. The solution also assists with the provision of cost-effective, green-powered mobile communications to remote communities.

Gateway Communications was the first to run a fully redundant MPLS network on SEACOM and it has also invested in the West African Cable System (WACS), which will become commercially available in 2012. In addition, Gateway has initiated projects to extend its high speed data networks from subsea landing stations into landlocked countries. It has customers in Malawi, Mozambique, Tanzania and Zambia that are currently benefitting from this important project.
